Security & Malware / Windows Defender & MSE PUA Tweak
« on: September 19, 2016, 07:13:11 pm »
Attached below are tweaks for Windows Defender (PUA10) and MSE (PUA7) to enable detection of PUA's (Potential Unwanted Applications). This increases the malware that Microsoft will detect giving you better protection than the default database. Simply download then extract the .reg file and double click on it to merge it into your registry then reboot to take effect. More information about this tweak can be found HERE.

It was questionable that this tweak works with MSE, I have tested it and it does. Enjoy!

General Computer Questions / How to Install Windows 10 Clean
« on: September 26, 2015, 10:26:31 am »
Here is what you need to do to clean install Windows 10 on a computer system.

1. You need a Windows 10 DVD or ISO image for that. Download the tool from HERE. Make sure you pick the right architecture and version.

2. Burn the ISO, mount it or extract it. The download above will allow you to burn the iso to disc or put it on a USB drive.

3. Navigate to the folder \Windows\x64\sources or P:\Windows\x32\sources and drag & drop the file gatherosstate.exe to the desktop while you are still in your current OS, Windows 7 or 8.

4. Run gatherosstate.exe as Administrator under Windows 7 or 8, it will create a file named GenuineTicket.xml on the desktop. This file is needed to activate Windows later so copy it to a USB drive or other location.

5. Run a clean install of Windows 10 on the system, make sure you skip the option to type in the product key.

6. Once you are done installing Windows 10, copy the file GenuineTicket.xml to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket. The folder is hidden by default. If you cannot see it, select File > Options > View > Show hidden files, folders and drives in File Explorer. Then reboot your pc and Windows 10 is legitimately activated without having to go through the long "upgrade" process.

Security & Malware / Norton ConnectSafe
« on: March 31, 2014, 02:10:41 pm »
Recently Norton ConnectSafe changed their DNS servers in order to provide a better service. To make it easier to change your DNS server settings I wrote three .bat files that will do it for you, they are all in the attached file at the bottom here named Norton ConnectSafe.zip, the three files are named Norton ConnectSafe Malware Blocking DNS.bat, Norton ConnectSafe Malware & Porn Blocking DNS.bat & Norton ConnectSafe Malware, Porn & Other Blocking DNS. The first blocks malware, phishing sites and scam sites, the second blocks malware, phishing sites and scam sites & porn sites and the third blocks malware, phishing and scam sites, porn sites and sites that feature: mature content, abortion, alcohol, crime, cult, drugs, gambling, hate, sexual orientation, suicide, tobacco or violence. I recommend everyone use at least the Norton ConnectSafe Malware Blocking DNS.bat, if you have children and want to keep them safer online I recommend using the Norton ConnectSafe Malware, Porn & Other Blocking DNS.

To use these files download the .zip file and right click on it and select "unzip here", then right click on DNS settings you prefer and select "run as Administrator", a black DOS box will open and set your DNS servers, when it's done hit any key to close the DOS box.

Security & Malware / avast! 2015 FREE Antivirus Setup Instructions
« on: November 20, 2013, 01:06:36 pm »
First you need to download avast! 2015 FREE Antivirus from here avast! 2015 FREE antivirus and download the file attached to the bottom of this post named drtweak avast2015.zip and unzip it. All images in this tutorial are clickable to make them larger for better viewing.

This is the first screen you will see during your avast! FREE installation, choose the option "Custom installation". If you do not want Dropbox installed then uncheck the option here.

Select "Continue" here.

Choose these custom options here. Under "Shields" only check "Mail Shield" if you are using an email program such as Microsoft Outlook or Windows Mail, the majority of users today use a web based email client so the mail shield is not needed. Under "Tools" Uncheck every box except for "NG", this is avast's new Next generation technology. If you do not see the option for NG then you need to enable virtualization in your BIOS - How to Enable Virtualization in your BIOS. I do not recommend installing any of the other features. Under "Language" choose yours. *Note* NG Technology is not an option when installing Avast in Windows 10.

Here simply select "Continue".

Once again select "Continue".

avast! will now install.

avast! is now installed, select "Done".

Choose the option to "Skip this tutorial".

Here is the main screen for avast!, make sure to select "Register"at the top. When prompted choose the option to stay with basic free protection. You have 30 days to do so for free definition updates for 1 year. Don't worry, they will not SPAM you, you will receive one email wanting you to verify that you are the customer registering. Now select the "Settings" option to the bottom left of this screen.

Scroll down to the bottom of the settings options and here is where you will insert my recommended settings, the file you downloaded from this post named drtweak avast2015.zip. Simply unzip the file and select "Restore settings".

This is the screen that you will see next, leave all boxes checked and select "Continue".

Make sure "Scan for potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) is checked, it should be checked with my settings but sometimes it doesn't get checked. Now select "OK" and reboot your computer.

Optimizing & Tweaking / Re: Registry Mechanic

I would ignore the entry, I would also not use Registry Mechanic. The only 2 registry cleaners I have found that work well and are safe are jv16 Powertools and Glary Utilities.

No, malware cannot phsically harm your pc.

General Computer Questions / How To Setup DVDFab and ImgBurn
« on: January 22, 2011, 12:49:11 pm »
How to copy a DVD, a question I am asked all the time. This is a short tutorial on how to use the best software for free to copy any DVD you like. First you need to download the two programs you will need, the first is DVDFab (*note* this program is updated almost weekly to always give you the latest options and new features) and ImgBurn. Install both of these free programs and then you are ready to set them up to work together. Something to mention about DVDFab, it's a 30 day trial for the full program but free forever to remove the copyright protection and rip the DVD to your hard drive, ImgBurn does the burning. Once they are both installed open DVDFab as shown below and click on the green circle with the check mark in it to open it's options.

Once the options are open go to the section shown above and choose ImgBurn as your burning engine then select ok to save these settings, you have to restart DVDFab for the settings to set.

Also, when you are copying a DVD with this setup you want to choose "DVD Copy" then "Main Movie" this will only copy the movie, not all the trailers and extra features. You should also uncheck any extra languages and sound formats you do not need, doing all of this will give you a better quality copy.

I'm not clear about what you are asking. Could you explain things a little better? What is 5k of threats? What OS? And what does this mean "ItS says loading.. Then it says saving your config.. And it shows me the account list to choose from"?

Uninstall SpyBot, you never want to use the Tea-Timer feature. You can reinstall it without Tea-Timer if you want. Then download the TCP Optimizer, save it to a location of your choice then right click on it and choose to "run as Administrator" and run it, then select "modify all network adapters" and then select "optimal" then "apply changes" and reboot, then test your connection.

I also see that you are using SP1 for Vista, there are many enhancements included in SP2, you should upgrade.

First thing you need to do is uninstall AVG and install MSE, then do a full scan.

Security & Malware / Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1963.0

If you are running a previous version of Microsoft Security Essentials, such as version 1.0.1407.0, 1.0.1500.0, 1.0.1610.0, 1.0.1961.0, or an earlier version, you may notice an action item that prompts you to upgrade to the latest version of the program. You are prompted to do this through the Microsoft Security Essentials user interface, through a pop-up window, or through a "toast" message. Additionally, you may notice an "Important" or "High priority" download, Microsoft Security Essentials Client update package - KB2254596, on Microsoft Update that offers an upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials.
